Before developing into a tourist place, Tanjung Benoa Beach Bali was a small port in 1546. This port was used by traders from China to dock and sell ceramics typical of their country. Meanwhile, local residents also sell Balinese handicrafts to these traders. This trade turned out to make some Chinese traders feel at home and decided to settle in Tanjung Benoa. Since it was occupied by these traders, you can find a fairly large pagoda or monastery on Tanjung Benoa Beach in Bali, Vihara Caow Eng Bio. Besides the monastery, you can also visit the Hindu temples, namely Dalem Tengkulung Benoa Tanjung Temple and Segara Temple.

Tanjung Benoa Beach

The background of Tanjung Benoa Beach is a fishing village and most of the local people’s livelihood at that time came from the sea. Since 1980 changes began to occur, starting from the Nusa Dua area which is close to Tanjung Benoa. In Nusa Dua at that time a luxury tourist area was built by ITDC (Indonesia Tourism Development Corporation). There are 5-star luxury hotels in this area.

The development of Nusa Dua is also felt by the residents of Tanjung Benoa. The Balinese government has also determined the development of marine tourism there plus establishing a green turtle breeding place that is rare and almost extinct. This development also changed the people’s livelihood. Most of them change professions to become hotel employees or create a marine tourism business known as Tanjung Benoa Water Sports.

Gunung Lebah Temple Ubud
Gunung Lebah Temple Ubud

Gunung Lebah Temple Ubud is located on Jalan Raya Campuhan, Ubud Village, precisely west of the heart of Ubud and close to the Campuhan Bridge. Is not like other tourist attractions of the island of Bali that have a beach to trying marine sport rides, then in this place you will get a natural tour with religious and mystical nuances. Are you curious, aren’t you? So don’t go anywhere, let’s look at the following information.

The history of Gunung Lebah Temple Ubud is closely related to the origin of the name Desa Ubud. This temple was established which can not be separated from the arrival of the first rsi to Bali in the 8th century, namely Rsi Markandhya, based on the Lontar Markandhya Purana. In addition to building the Temple of Mount Lebah Ubud, he also helped build the largest temple in Bali, namely the Great Temple of Besakih in Karangasem, the Great Temple of Mount Raung in Taro Village and Pucak Payogan Temple in the Village of Lungsiakan Ubud.

Narrated on the journey of Rsi Markandhya from Mount Raung in East Java to Mount Raung in Taro Village, Tegallalang, to spread the teachings of Hinduism he came to a small hill that extends to the south and north, this hill is called Gunung Lebah which to the west there is a river flow Tukad Yeh Wos Kiwa (left) and east of the hill there is a river flow Tukad Yeh Wos Tengen (right), both rivers have a very clear water flow. The two streams meet in the southern part of Mount Lebah and the area is later called Campuhan. It was in this Campuhan that Rsi Markandhya established the Gunung Lebah Temple, he also held a hermitage and began to explore the forest to make settlements for his followers.

In accordance with Lontar Markandya Purana, the name of Sungai Tukad Yes Wos for the two rivers makes the name of the settlement of that period in accordance with the meaning of “Wos or Uos named Usadi, Usadi named Usada, and Usada named Ubad”. From the word Ubad is transcribed into “Ubud”.

Gunung Lebah Temple Ubud which is located in the Campuhan River valley which is the confluence of the two rivers of Wos Kiwa and Wos Tengen, has its own uniqueness compared to other temples which generally temples in Bali are always in a higher place in the mountains because it reflects the mountain which is the symbol of holiness. Although this temple is located in a river valley, its orientation remains towards the mountain, namely Mount Batur. The shape of the sacred building in this temple is that there are several meru (multi level tire roof), meru is a symbol of the mountain. At Gunung Lebah Temple, there are several meru that have different functions. This temple is now widely visited and is a special attraction for local and foreign tourists. This temple is also located the same as Campuhan Hill for jogging track (Campuhan Ridge Walk).

Dwarapala Statue
Dwarapala Statue

This temple was built in the open air which consists of several parts and is surrounded by a wall fence. Each part is connected by a gate (temple) with beautiful carvings. The structure of the Gunung Lebah Temple Ubud follows the concept of Tri Mandala (tri = three, mandala = part). This Tri Mandala is a symbol of Tri Bhuwana, namely:

1. Nista Mandala (Outer Courtyard) – symbol of bhur loka
2. Madya Mandala (Middle Courtyard) – symbol of bhuwah loka
3. Utama Mandala (Inner Courtyard) – symbol of swah loka

Nista Mandala is the outermost part which is the entrance to the temple. Before entering Nista Mandala, there is Candi Bentar which is decorated with the Dwarapala Statue, a guard figure in front of the gate gate. Each of the statues is named Nandiswara which is located to the right of the gate and Mahakala which is located to the left of the gate. The existence of both is associated with the power of Lord Shiva as one of the manifestations of God in Hinduism.

Madya Mandala is the middle zone where people have activities and supporting facilities. In this zone there are Bale Kul-kul, Bale Gong, Bale Pesandekan, and Perantenan.

Utama Mandala is the deepest zone, and is the most sacred place of this temple. To enter this place, people have to go through Candi Bentar again. In this zone there are Padmasana, Pelinggih Meru, Bale Peselang, Bale Piyasan, Bale Pepelik, Bale Panggungan, Bale Pawedan, Bale Patok, Bali Pangaruman and other Pelinggih.
